Mission
Statement
Affecting
an estimated 4 million people in the United States, Alzheimer's disease
is the most common cause of brain disruption in older people.
The disease, which usually begins after the age of 65, affects the
parts of the brain that control thought, memory, and language.
Three percent of men and women
ages 65 to 74 have the disease, and nearly half of those age 85 and older may
have it. According to the National Institute on Aging, the government's lead
agency for Alzheimer’s research, Alzheimer's is not a normal part of
aging.
The Alzheimer's and Aging Research Center supports research of Alzheimer’s
disease and other aging-related diseases. We fund research which is focused
on finding treatments for these diseases, and we provide information to the
scientific
community and to the general public worldwide, via scientific publications
and presentations, brochures, a website, and other reports. We also support
research
training for high school, undergraduate and graduate students, and to visiting
research scholars from countries worldwide.
Since 1995, the scientists we support have been conducting this research, presenting
the results to the public, and training students. We make it a priority to
ensure that the research results are shared with the public throughout the
world, and
we also work to foster international scientific collaborations between our
scientists and others who specialize in this field.
The effect of Alzheimer's weighs heavily on the shoulders of society. Many
spouses, relatives, and friends take care of people with Alzheimer’s. As they watch
their loved ones become more forgetful and frustrated, they too, experience the
mental, physical, and financial burden. The estimated annual costs for Alzheimer’s
patients are close to $50 billion.
